Once again, the Champaign County Freedom Celebration is hosting a celebration of our American heritage Saturday, July 4th! This year's dynamite schedule of events begins with registration at 9:30 am for the Youth Run and 5K Race-Walk. The parade begins at 1:05 pm at the corner of Lincoln and Nevada streets. Evening entertainment commences at 7 pm with a live performance by the Brat Pack, and the fireworks display approximately at 9:15 pm at Dodds Park. Join the Celebration Company at The Station Theatre for the smash hit musical production of 'The Full Monty' until Saturday, July 11th, 2009. Our Americanized version is adapted from a 1997 British comedy film winner of the BAFTA Award for Best Film, and nominated for four Academy Awards. It tells the story of six unemployed men, four of them steel workers, who decide to form a male striptease act (à la Chippendale dancers) in order to gather enough money to get somewhere else and for main character Gaz to be able to see his son. As they prepare for the show, working through their fears, self-consciousness, and anxieties, they overcome their inner demons and find strength in their camaraderie. Enjoy this outrageous musical comedy by David Yazbeck and Terrence McNally, directed by Mikel L. Matthews Jr.
The Verizon Wireless Cycling Team and Wild Card Cycling are proud to bring an exciting weekend of national caliber racing to the streets of Champaign Saturday and Sunday, July 11th and 12th, 2009! Hundreds of bikers from across the U.S. will participate in the First Annual Tour de Champaign in our downtown streets. All ages and skill levels are invited, with races lasting from 30 to 70 minutes. Some of the most highly skilled bikers will fly at speeds of 30 MPH and more. Saturday evening following the race, the Champaign Park District and the City of Champaign sponsor the July Streetfest, featuring street concerts at the corner of Walnut and Chester streets. Country/Rock group 'One Night Stand' and Classic Rock band 'Mister Sister' will take the stage to highlight the night from 7 pm to midnight. Don't miss this one!
Leah Rippy, the 2008 Miss Champaign County Fair Queen, will crown the new 2009 Miss Champaign County Fair Queen Saturday, July 11th, 1:30 pm at Parkland College. The pageant is a chance for a young woman between 16 and 21 years old to serve as the Champaign County Fair's ambassador next year. Along with reigning over fair festivities between July 24 and Aug. 1, the winner will compete for Miss Illinois County Fair 2010 next January. The queen will visit local schools, civic groups, open houses and parades. Previous queens have met musical entertainers and spent time with state officials. As part of the festivities, previous Queens have opened the fair's rodeo and roped calves, ridden motorcycles and monster trucks, handed out ribbons, read to elementary school students and attended the Champaign Park District's Daddy-Daughter Princess Ball as a guest of honor. This year's queen will be the 40th in history and will win a scholarship and other prizes. Admission is $2 at the door for audience members 12 years and older.
Join us at the Champaign Public Library for the Harry Potter Spectacular Saturday, July 18th from 2 pm to 2:45 pm. Deck yourself out as your favorite Harry Potter character (or just paint a lightning bolt in the middle of your forehead) and join us at this celebration for grades K to 5. No registration is needed, come to the Robeson Pavilion Room A & B in the Main Library. Don't miss the fun!
